Two late-twentieth-century Beaver II respirators. These devices were created by anaesthetist Robert Atwood Beaver (1905-1975) in response to the polio epidemic of the 1950s. It was intended to be used by patients whose lungs were paralysed, by delivering oxygen via the rubber bag. Both of these devices were made by the British Oxygen Company Limited.
