2018 Kirkpatrick Award Finalists


We are very excited to announce the finalists for this year’s Kirkpatrick History of Medicine Award, which will be taking place on Thursday 18 October. This award aims to encourage new research into history of medicine in Ireland.


This year’s four finalists are;

Lloyd (Meadhbh) Houston – ‘Dear Dr Kirkpatrick’: Recovering Irish Experiences of Venereal Diseases in the 1920s

Aisling Shalvey – The Eight Amendment in Historical Perspective

Triona Waters – Remedying the ‘growing evil’: The curable and incurable patients of the Limerick District Lunatic Asylum 1827-1887

Shelby Zimmerman – The South Dublin Union and Cork Street Fever Hospital’s Response to the Smallpox Epidemic of 1871-3


The Kirkpatrick Award is part of a full day of lectures organised by the Heritage Centre. The first part of the day will explore 350 years of obstetrics and gynaecology in Ireland. Full details of the programme can be found online. Attendance is free but booking is recommended
