Heritage Centre events for Heritage Week 2015

Tours and events at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland during National Heritage Week 2015

We are delighted to announce its line up of events for this year’s National Heritage Week.

Tours of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland at No. 6 Kildare Street on Monday 24 August
Nestled beside the National Library of Ireland on Dublin’s Kildare Street, No.6 has been the home of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland since 1864. Thanks to its rich medical past, No.6 houses a collection of artefacts and antiques reflecting the history of the College. Many of its elegant rooms remain as they were in 1864 when the building was opened.

On Monday 24 August, the College will open its doors to the public. There will be three guided tours, allowing guests to learn about the fascinating history of this unusual building and the College’s role in the development of modern medicine in Ireland.

Tours will commence at 11.30, 13.00 and 15.30.

Medical Provision and the Irish Experience of the First World War

On Tuesday 25 August, the historian David Durnin (Centre for the History of Medicine in Ireland, UCD) will give a lunchtime lecture examining the role and experiences of Irish doctors in the First World War. His talk will also explore the impact of the War on Irish hospitals that treated sick and wounded soldiers.

David’s talk will commence at 13.00

Is there a doctor in your house? Family History Records in RCPI

On Wednesday 26 August, Harriet Wheelock, RCPI’s Keeper of Collections, will provide an introduction to the rich and varied sources in the College’s archives that can be used for tracing the lives of Irish medical practitioners. There will be an opportunity after the talk for aspiring genealogists to ask questions and consult the records.

Harriet’s talk will commence at 13.00

Art, Science, History & Medicine since the Renaissance - A selection from the Visual Time Traveller

On Thursday 27 August, the author Alison Hackett will give a visual tour through the history of art, science and medicine, based on her publication The Visual Time Traveller. Her work, published in 2013, provides a visual introduction to 500 years of history; described by one reviewer as “A labour of love, insanity, beauty and, perhaps, an attempt to reintegrate history, art and science together again”.

Alison’s talk will commence at 13.00

Pop up cafe in the Graves Hall

Members of the public will be able to enjoy tea, coffee and a range of delicious pastries and savoury treats at a unique pop-up cafe in the College’s Graves Hall during National Heritage Week. With its fine plasterwork and marble statues representing 19th century Presidents of the College, this will be a memorable place for a nice cup of tea and a sit down!
