History of Medicine - Upcoming Events
June will see a couple of conferences on the history of medicine in Ireland. The first held on Friday 8
th and Saturday 9
th June, is hosted by the Centre for the History of Medicine in Ireland, at University College Dublin, and looks at
'Healthcare systems, regional and comparative perspective in Britain and Ireland, 1850-1960'. The keynote speaker on Friday 8
th is Prof. John Stewart (Glasgow Caledonian University) who will be giving a paper on '
Health Care Systems in Britain and Ireland in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries: the International, National and Sub-National Contexts'. Other papers at the conference will look at the Smallpox outbreak in Dublin in 1902, health care provision in the South Wales Coalfields, the involvement of churches in the provision of healthcare and an examination of surviving healthcare records in Irish archives.

At the end of June the Centre for the History of Medicine in Ireland, University of Ulster and the Public Records Office Northern Ireland (PRONI) will be co-hosting a one day symposium on '
Health and Welfare in the Archives'. This symposium will be held on 22
nd June in the new PRONI building in the Titanic Quarter of Belfast. The event will bring together archivists and academics working on the areas of health and welfare, to discuss issues such as; how the records are used in academic research; how they have informed and directed research; issues relating to access to records; working with sensitive or confidential material and the acquisition and cataloguing of records. The keynote speaker is Dr Lesley Hall, senior archivist at the Wellcome Library, who will be giving a paper on '
