Kirkpatrick Award Finalists Announced

We are very excited to announce the finalists for this year’s Kirkpatrick History of Medicine Award, which will be taking place on Thursday 20 October. Now in its 6th year the award aims to encourage new research into history of medicine in Ireland.

This year’s three finalists are;

Stephen Bance, Centre for the History of Medicine in Ireland, UCD, speaking on Polio in Ireland: rehabilitation and re-integration in the mid-twentieth century.

Leanne Calvert, University of Ulster, speaking on ‘A more careful tender nurse cannot be than my dear husband’: Reassessing the role of men in pregnancy and childbirth in Ulster, c.1780-1838.

David Kilgannon, NUI Galway, speaking on ‘One class of people who have been neglected in this country’. Locating the intellectually disabled child in 1950 Ireland.

The Kirkpatrick Award is part of a full day of events organised by the Heritage Centre, exploring different aspect of the history of medicine in Ireland, with the main focus on the year 1916.
