Public Lectures - Irish Medicine in War and Revolution
The Heritage Centre will be holding a day of free public lectures on Thursday 20th October exploring Irish medicine in 1916.
With revolution at home and war abroad, 1916 was a tumultuous year in Irish history, and the talks will look at both the Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme. Speakers will explore the impact of the Rising on some of Dublin’s medical institutions, including the National Maternity Hospital and the College of Physicians.
Dr Rhona Mahony, Master National Maternity Hospital and FRCPI, will be giving a talk on childbirth in 1916 at our event - she outlines what to expect and why these lectures will be of interest to all.
The second half of the day will focus on the Battle of the Somme, and this impact of this event on Ireland, medicine and poetry.
The day will finish with the sixth year of the Kirkpatrick History of Medicine Award, which profiles new research in the history of medicine. The shortlisted speakers for the prize will be announced shortly.
The event will take place in 6 Kildare Street, Dublin, attendance at the event is free, and places can be booked on the RCPI website. We look forwards to seeing you there!
