RCPI Heritage Centre Lectures 2012

The RCPI Heritage Centre is delighted to announce that the RCPI Heritage Centre Lectures will be held this year on Thursday 18, October, as part of RCPI St. Luke's Day Symposium.

This year the lectures will explore the development of medicine in Ireland during the 19th century. Dr Larry Geary, from University College Cork, will speak on 'Medical and Social Philanthropy: The Society for Promoting the Comforts of the Poor'. Dr Brendan Kelly, Consultant Psychiatrist at the Mater Hospital, will speak on 'Custody, Care and Criminality: Forensic psychiatry in nineteenth-century Ireland'. Finally Dr Laura Kelly, from the Centre for the History of Medicine in Ireland, UCD, will look at the admission of women to the medical professions in her paper 'Progress which accords with the spirit of our age: the admission of women into the KQCPI and Irish Medical Schools'.

The lectures will be followed by the RCPI History of Medicine Research Award, where four shortlisted candidates will present on their recent research in this area, with the winner of the award being announced at the end of the event. The short-listing for the award will take place shortly, and the names and topics of the four candidates will then be released.

The Lectures commence at 2pm on Thursday, 18 October, with registration from 1.30. The lectures will be followed at 3.30pm by the RCPI History of Medicine Award; there will then be a reception and the presentation of the award at 5pm.

This event is open to all and is free of charge, for medics attending the event has been approved for 2 CPD credits. The number of places at this event are limited, so registration is advised – tickets can be booked by contacting college@rcpi.ie or 01 8639700.
