RCPI History of Medicine Research Award finalist announced

RCPI's Heritage Centre is pleased to announce the finalists for this year's RCPI History of Medicine Research Award. The entries were of a very high standard but our judges managed to narrow the applicant's down to a short list of four finalists.

Michael Dwyer from UCC will present his paper on the historical significance of diphtheria and the rollout of childhood immunisation programs in Ireland. The Irish Red Cross Society Blood Transfusion Service 1940-45 will be presented by Shane Lehane, also from UCC. Clara Cullen from MUCD Humanities Institute will discuss War work on the home front: the Central Sphagnum Moss Deport for Ireland at the Royal College of Science for Ireland (1915-1919). Finally, Visions of Reproduction: The Anatomical Venus in Victorian Dublin will be explored by Martina Hynan from the School of Art History & Cultural Policy at UCD.

Each of the four finalists will present their research papers in 15 minute talks to an adjudication panel on Wednesday 16 October 2013 as part of the St. Luke's Symposium. The judging panel will select the award winner on the day; the award prize is €250.

This event is open to the public and is free of charge and you are more than welcome to attend, places can be booked on the RCPI website.

The History of Medicine Research Award is part of RCPI's annual St Luke's Symposium, which features a range of educational, social and celebratory events. Details of all events taking place during St. Luke's can be found here.

Dr Anne Mac Lellan won the award last year and presented her paper entitled Victims or Vector? Tubercular Irish nurses in England 1930-1960.
