Robert Boyle Summer School 2016

Booking is now open for the annual Robert Boyle Summer School, to be held in Lismore from 23rd - 26th June.

The Summer School was established to explore the place of science in Ireland's heritage and culture. The 2016 School will address the theme 'Science and Irish Identity'. The theme will resonate with the commemorations of the 1916 Rising and the Battle of the Somme. The theme presents the opportunity to explore different Irish identities not in terms of conflict, but in their involvement in, and attitudes towards, science.

The talk the especially caught our eye was Prof Jim Malone's talk Rev Samuel Haughton FRS MD. Scientist, Scholar, Priest, Doctor: Whither Identity. Haughton, a Fellow of RCPI, is famous for many contributions to mathematics, medicine and geology. However, his most extraordinary contribution is, perhaps, Haughton's Drop - a 'humane' method of hanging.
